Road Rehabilitation and New Road Construction Remain Key Priorities for PWD in 2026

Date:

Basseterre, St. Kitts (Public Infrastructure New) – The Department of Public Works (PWD) remains committed to advancing road rehabilitation and new road construction projects across the island, according to Director (Ag.) Xia-Xiang Claxton. She made the remarks during the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, and Utilities’ Progress Update held in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Transport and the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology, and Post, at the CUNA Conference Building on June 16, 2026.

Claxton reported that the PWD Roads Division, in conjunction with local contractors, completed more than 60,000 linear feet of road improvement works over the past year, equivalent to approximately 11 miles. She noted that these improvements have enhanced accessibility, drainage, safety, and overall driving conditions across the island’s road network.

Supporting Claxton’s statement, Head of the PWD Roads Division Zekey Hazel outlined a number of asphalt road improvement projects undertaken by his team in 2025, totaling approximately 13,000 linear feet of roadway. The works were carried out in areas including Bourkes Road, Cleverly Hill, and Stadium View in Sandy Point; Southwell Drive, George Street, and the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site in East Basseterre; and several other locations in West Basseterre.

Hazel also added that in 2026, the division’s activity has consisted of work in St. Paul, New Road and Bird Rock, with work in the latter two areas expected to continue in the days and weeks ahead.

Underscoring the magnitude and significance of his assignment, Hazel acknowledged:

“We still have quite a number of roads around the island that we need to resurface. With time, we will get to all of them and ensure that everyone has a safe and smooth road to traverse.”

Claxton added that the division’s rehabilitative roadwork was buttressed by local contractors executing capital projects for new roads. Those projects consisted of roadwork at Whitehouse Gardens Phase 1, Shadwell East, Boyds View, Sunset Reef Road, Racecourse in Newton Ground, and Rawlins Extension in St. Paul.

The Public Works Department is a critical component of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, and Utilities, with responsibilities that include maintaining the island’s road network.
